If you’re a former foster youth in San Diego trying to survive the Age 21 Cliff, you’ve probably had those days where you feel like you’re glitching.
You have a simple task—like calling a landlord or checking your bank account—and your heart starts racing. Or maybe you just feel "stuck" on the couch, unable to move, even though you have a million things to do.
In the system, they call that "non-compliance" or "laziness." At HACKED, we call it the ACEs Receipt.
What is an ACE Score?
ACEs stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences. It’s a fancy way of measuring the "biological stress" you went through before you turned 18. For us, the score is usually high. Removal from home? That’s an ACE. Moving placements? ACE. Household dysfunction? ACE.
The Science: Why Your "CEO" is on Vacation
Your brain has a "CEO" called the Prefrontal Cortex. It handles the big stuff: planning, budgeting, and staying calm.
But when you grow up in foster care, your brain spends all its energy on the Amygdala—the "Alarm System." Your brain got really good at sensing danger, but the "CEO" never got the funding it needed.
So when you age out, the world expects you to be a CEO, but your brain is still acting like a Security Guard.
How to Hack Your ACEs (The Survival Guide)
Stop the Shame Spiral: If you’re overwhelmed by a rental application, it’s not because you’re "not ready" for the real world. It’s because your "Alarm System" thinks that piece of paper is a threat. Breathe. Tell your brain: "We are safe. This is just paper."
Externalize Your Brain: Since our internal "CEO" gets tired easily, use external tools.
Don’t "try" to remember to pay rent. Set an autopay. * Don’t "try" to remember an appointment. Put three alarms in your phone. 3. The "Vibe" is Medical: This is why I talk about "Soft Life" hacks. A signature scent, a clean bed, or a "lazy girl" workout isn't just for the aesthetic. It’s medicine for your nervous system. It tells your Amygdala to stand down so your CEO can finally do some work.
Find Your "Protective Factors": The research says that one stable relationship or a safe home (hello, San Diego ADUs) can start to undo the damage of a high ACE score.
The Bottom Line
You aren't broken. You are highly adapted to a chaotic environment. Now that you’re out, we just have to "re-program" the software.
You aren't a "case file" anymore. You’re the C.E.O. now.
Being kind to yourself means giving yourself the tools to win. The 'Age 21 Cliff' is coming, but we’re building a bridge over it. I’ve hacked the CA foster care system so you don't have to : 6 things every foster kid needs to know
and for my ladies; If your ACE score has your 'Alarm System' stuck on high alert, you don't need a gym—you need to tell your body it's safe to rest. I started hacking my nervous system right from my blankets. [Check out the 5-Minute 'Lazy Girl' Bed Workout to calm your stress here.]
